2007 Carbon offset project in India: sustainable development in a jute mill project

In order to compensate for our emissions, we support a project, which aims to replace inefficient coal-fired boilers with new biomass boilers.

Quality standard

The project is taking place in the context of the recommendations given through the Kyoto Protocol. It is a contribution to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. These measures taken were validated as being a small CDM-Project (Clean Development Mechanism falls under the Kyoto Protocols context for environment- friendly development aid).

1089 tons VER from this project were bought to offset the Munich Re Foundation’s CO2 emissions for the year 2007. With the project the Foundation continues its engagement in India.

 

India – Biomass fuel switch

When this biomass project was commissioned at a jute mill, it was the first of its kind in India. This project substitutes the use of coal with jute biomass residue (caddies), an inexpensive natural fibre also known as burlap, for steam generation. Steam is used in jute mills for several processes. The project developer, with the view to take advantage of the locally available biomass materials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the site, decided to install a new boiler to replace two old inefficient coal-fired boilers.

The new replacement boiler uses jute caddies for fuel to generate steam. The jute caddies utilized in this project, are made of ash dust and waste jute fibres, which otherwise were dumped in landfills. The project helps to contribute to India’s sustainable development goals.

Sustainable development by:
  • Reducing air and water pollution associated with coal use, transportation and combustion
  • Avoiding employee health hazards from handling and working with coal
  • Increasing the security of natural resources
  • Providing a solution to the problem of disposal of fly ash from the coal-fired boiler and the disposal of jute caddies to landfill

This project is a registered CDM project with historic emission reductions available to sell as VERs. Through the use of biomass instead of coal this project helps to reduce approximately 5,100 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
